9. I should like to take this opportunity of placing on record the friendly and co-operative spirit animating the United

States, italian and Japanese Joar-Admirals who have done their

utmost to assist me. Information and movements of our respective

ships have been freely exchanged, and at times mails and stores have

been carried by and for British men-of-war. In fact we have acted

as one Navy in support of foreign interests.

10. The situation at the Yangtse ports has remained quiet and unchanged. At Hankow, a long deferred demonstration is planned

for the 7th September, and in view of the possibilities arising

from it, "DESPATCH" is, with your approval, remaining at Hankow until the 8th September, when on relief by "HOLLYHOCK" she will proceed to Wei-hai-wei, in accordance with your instructions.

11.

In Szechuan, the defeat of the ex Tupan Tang Sen by

forces under Tuan Tsu King, now appears to be complete. This is unfortunate from the foreign point of view as Yuan has in the past, displayed strong anti-foreign feeling. On 21st August Bishop Howll and several other Hissionaries were reported as being captured by bandits near Changtu, the Capital of Szechuan. Press reports state that the Chinese are endeavouring to effect their release.

13.

The situation at Ningpo continues to be peaceful and unchanged. "HOLLYHOOK" will on the 2nd September proceed to Hankow to relieve "DESPATCH" in accordance with your instructions. I do not consider that the situation at Ningpo merits the stationing of a sloop there, but would suggest that occasional visits be made.
